Shockwave Therapy & Dry Needling

At Momentum Podiatry we understand the importance of getting you back on your feet as quickly as possible. This is why we use shockwave therapy and dry needling in conjunction with strength and offloading to help with your recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dry Needling is a technique that involves inserting thin needles into trigger points to relieve pain and improve flexibility. While similar to acupuncture in the use of needles, Dry Needling focuses on targeting specific muscular trigger points to address pain and discomfort.

Patients may experience mild discomfort during Dry Needling as the needles are inserted into trigger points. However, the sensation is typically brief, and many patients find the treatment provides effective pain relief.

Both Shockwave Therapy and Dry Needling are generally safe treatments with minimal side effects. Some patients may experience mild soreness or redness at the treatment site, which typically resolves within a short period. Your podiatrist will discuss any potential risks or side effects during your consultation.

Shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment used to treat tendons, muscles and soft tissue to reduce chronic inflammation. It produces high-intensity sound waves which travel through the skin to damaged tissue and interrupt the chronic pain pathways to promote blood flow/healing by causing disruption of the small blood vessels in tendons.

The number of sessions depends on the type and severity of your pathology, usually, 3 to 5 treatments are required to achieve a therapeutic effect.

Shockwave treatment can be used to treat:

  • Plantar heel pain
  • Achilles tendinopathy
  • Patella tendinopathy
  • Bursitis/neuritis
  • Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints)
  • Muscular trigger points
  • Other tendinopathies of the foot and ankle
  • Plantar fasciitis: Shockwave therapy is used to deliver high-energy shockwaves to the affected area, stimulating healing by promoting the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the area. It can also help to reduce inflammation, break up scar tissue and reduce pain.

We include shockwave therapy as part of your podiatry consultation fee.

Dry Needling

Dry needling is an effective and safe way to remove muscle knots which can cause pain or dysfunction. At Momentum Podiatry we use dry needling to assist our treatment of a range of musculoskeletal conditions.

The aim of dry needling is to release trigger points in the muscles and connective tissue which will minimise pain and improve structural and functional damage occurring.

At Momentum Podiatry we use this in conjunction with other treatment modalities to keep you moving and to get you back to your normal activities.

Dry Needling can be used to treat:

Tight calves: thin needles target trigger points or tight bands of muscle within the calf. The aim is to release muscle tightness, improve blood flow and reduce pain.

Plantar fasciitis: The planter fascia is a thick band of tissue connecting your heel to your toes. When it gets inflamed, it can cause significant heel pain. Dry needling targets trigger points and stimulates blood flow, releases muscle tension and promotes healing.

Shin splints: Shin splints is a painful condition caused by inflammation of the muscles, tendons and tissues surrounding the tibia. Dry needling can help by releasing tension in the trigger points, improving blood flow and reducing pain.

and many more.
